For some reason, this particular piece of writing advice is widely hated or loved depending on what you write. What I don’t really understand is why ‘write what you know’ counts as a writing rule. We’re all already doing that.

This phrase shouldn’t be handed out as advice or touted as a rule for good writing. Every single writer that has ever written anything is already doing this.

You have to write what you know. If you do not know what you are writing, you do what every writer does, research the topic until you know it. It’s not that revolutionary.

We all need to stop freaking out about this phrase. It isn’t worth the time we spend dwelling on it.

Write what you know, research what you don’t.

As always, I cannot wait to see you on the bookshelf.
